Prescriptions

Use Prescriptions in a patient’s Dental record to record medication instructions, load saved templates, and prepare a patient-specific print preview. Prescriptions are saved with the dental record.

Before you start

Open the correct clinic and patient. Confirm the patient’s name in the header, then select Dental.

RoleDental access
Admins and doctorsCan open Dental for patients they can access.
AssistantsNeed an admin to grant the Dental permissions they need and access to the patient.
ReceptionistsCannot access Dental.

Assistants need Read to open Dental. Creating a dental record requires Create; changing an existing record or prescription requires Update. Both actions require edit access to the patient. Read-only access lets a person review an existing prescription but not change or save it. See Patient access for sharing details.

Add or open a prescription

  1. In Dental records, select a row to open the record. To start a new record, select Add record.
  2. In the record editor, select Prescription to add a prescription card. To work with an existing prescription, expand its card.
  3. Check the prescription’s Date.
Prescription cards are part of a dental record and are saved with it.

Add a medicine from the clinic list

Search Medications in the prescription card and select the matching item from the clinic list. Review its Scientific name, Brand name, Strength, Form, and Route. Selecting a list item fills its saved medicine details into the prescription.

Enter a custom medication

  1. Select Add custom medication in the prescription card.
  2. Enter the Scientific name and Strength with its unit, then choose the Form and Route. Brand name is optional.
  3. Under Dosage, choose Interval to enter Every and For values with their units, or choose Custom to write the instruction.
  4. Add a Note if needed.
Add a medicine that is not in the clinic list; the brand name can be left blank.

Only enter medication instructions provided by the responsible clinician. The app records the details but does not determine whether a medicine or dosage is appropriate for the patient.

After either method, add any other medicines needed, remove any unintended entry, and check the prescription Date. Select Save on the dental record and wait for the Record created or Record updated notification. A prescription is not saved separately from its dental record.

Load a prescription template

A prescription template is a reusable set of medication entries and their saved details. To load one into the patient’s prescription:

  1. Select Template in the prescription card.
  2. In Load prescription template, search for and select the template. Select Load more if more results are available.
  3. If the prescription is empty, select Load. If it already has medicines, choose Add to keep them and append the template, or Replace to replace its current medicine entries.
  4. Review every medicine, instruction, and date for this patient. Then save the dental record.

Replace removes the medicines currently in that prescription card before loading the template. Review the selection before continuing. Create and manage reusable templates in Prescriptions.

When a prescription already has medicines, choose whether to append the template or replace those entries.

Preview and print

Select Print preview in the prescription card. Review the patient, prescriber, clinic, date, medicines, and instructions. Use the browser’s print options to print the prescription or save it as a PDF.

Opening print preview does not save the dental record. Save the record so the prescription remains in the patient’s history.

Review the patient-specific prescription before printing or saving it as a PDF.

Change or remove a prescription

Open the dental record and expand the prescription card. Update the date, medicine details, or instructions, then select Save and wait for the Record updated notification. Use a medicine entry’s remove icon to remove just that medicine. To remove the whole prescription, select Remove prescription and save the dental record.

If an action is unavailable

  • A medicine is not in the search results: check the spelling or use Add custom medication. If the clinic needs the medicine in its reusable list, ask someone with access to Medications to add it.
  • No template is available: change the search or create one in Prescriptions, if your role permits it.
  • A template has no medicines: choose another template or add medicine entries to it in Prescriptions.
  • You cannot add or change a prescription: check your Dental Create or Update permission and edit access to the patient with an admin.
  • Print preview does not appear: wait for the patient and clinic details to load, select Print preview again, and check whether the browser’s print window opened behind another window.
